New outlook on life after accident

"I stared into the eyes of death, but thanks to God my life was spared" - accident survivor

MOKOPANE – These were the words of Mphoza Mashabela, Chairperson of the Limpopo Artist Movement, after he recently survived a car accident on the N1 outside Mokopane.

Mashabela told Bosveld he was on his way back to Mokopane from a meeting in Polokwane, when the driver of a bakkie recklessly over-took another vehicle and crashed into the passenger side of the vehicle Mashaba was travelling in. “Our vehicle overturned three times before landing on its wheels again. I was in the passenger seat and one of my friends was driving. Fortunately, we were wearing our seatbelts otherwise we would have been thrown from the vehicle.”

Mashabela further said he remembered bystanders shouting that they should get out of the vehicle before it catches fire. “I was trapped, but managed to escape through the reardoor.” Mphoza was rushed to the Voortrekker Hospital and treated for numerous injuries including a broken leg.

According to Mashabela, the driver of both vehicles was treated for light injuries.

Mashabela says he is grateful to God for protecting them. He appeals to all motorists to refrain from taking chances and to consider not only themselves, but other motorists on the road.

“We have lost many lives on this part of the N1 between Mokopane and Mookgophong this year, I believe it is due to the fact that drivers are careless. Do the honourable thing and obey the law,” Mashabela concluded.
