Ivory poacher gets suspended sentence, fine

Two accused who were arrested on August 2013 for unlawful possession of elephant tusks have appeared in the Thohoyandou Regional Court on 23 September 2016.

LIMPOPO- According to a Hawks Organised Crime Unit report  the members received information that the duo was in possession elephant tusks to the value of R44 640.

A thorough follow op on the information received led to the arrest of the two accused, Richard Ramurafhi(48) and Derrick Shirinda(58) said provincial Hawks spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke.

During the trial Ramurafhi was not found guilty. His co-accused Shirinda was found guilty, convicted and fined R40 000 or two years imprisonment and further five years imprisonment suspended for five years said Maluleke.

“This will serve as a deterrent to all poachers that a heavy fine will be imposed on them if they are found guilty,” concludes Maluleke.
