Firearm possession, handling under the spotlight

When the license holder passes on, family members must report the existence of the firearm immediately.

LIMPOPO – The Provincial Firearm Liquor and Second Hand Goods (FLESH) Unit is making a special appeal to the families of deceased firearm owners to report the existence of a firearm to their local police station immediately for safekeeping.

If they do not do so, they possess the firearm illegally. The South African Firearm Act must be complied with and firearm owners are advised to handle their firearms in accordance with the prescripts of this act.

The firearm must be kept in a safe, or on the body of the owner with a prescribed authorised holster at all times. Firearms must not be kept inside motor vehicles or under a pillow or anywhere else except the two places mentioned above. Any loss of a firearm, including theft, must be reported to the police immediately.

Issued by provincial police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.
