Joint inauguration a great success for Waterberg
Visitors across the district joined in the celebrations of this prestigious event.
LIMPOPO – The joint inauguration ceremony of the newly elected mayors of the Waterberg District, following the local government elections earlier this year, took place last Saturday at the Mahwelereng Stadium.
The mayors were sworn in by Chief Magistrate, Leshwene Mashapu, and the MEC for Cooperative Governance Human Settlement and Transitional Affairs (CoGHSTA), Makoma Makhurupetje.
The mayors who were sworn in were: Waterberg District Mayor Morris Mataboge, Mogalakwena Municipality Mayor Andrina Matsemela, Bela-Bela Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni, Modimolle/Mookgophong Mayor Marlene Van Staden, and Thabazimbi Mayor Midah Moselane.
Lephalale Mayor, Jack Maeko could not attend the inauguration ceremony.
In her speech, Matsemela, emphasised the fact that municipalities are there to serve its people and that under no circumstances must service delivery lack at the expense of the citizens.
“I am confident that the leaders to be inaugurated by Makhurupetje today are deeply committed to a system of local government.
“We will continue to be servants of the people and we are willing to devote all our time to the promotion of the welfare of the people of our respective municipalities,” Matsemela said.
“Our councils must be able to deal with the issues at hand to ensure that the disadvantaged areas are declared priorities and that they receive major attention as a result.
“The provision of free basic amounts of electricity and water to our people will alleviate the plight of the poorest among us while plans for the stimulation of the local economy should lead to the creation of new jobs and the reduction of poverty,” Matsemela added.
In closure Matsemela expressed her words of appreciation to the Mayor of the Waterberg District Municipality, Morris Mataboge, for affording them the opportunity to be the host of this prestigious event.
