Off-duty, unarmed SAPS officers take down armed criminals

Three unarmed, off-duty police officers driving to Nkowankowa from Tzaneen yesterday (Thursday) morning put their lives on the line to chase down armed robbers.

LIMPOPO – At approximately 06:30 this morning, Joe Shingange, Sgt Johan Sanderson and Const Vukatimuni Mushwana were en route to Nkowankowa when they came across a robbery in progress.

An unknown number of armed suspects had stopped a motorist, pointed their firearms at the occupants of the vehicle and demanded cash. The suspects made away with R400 and a bag full of clothes.

The three police officers approached the suspects who immediately fled the scene in two separate vehicles. The officers pursued one of the vehicles and when the suspects realised the police were on their tale, jumped out of their vehicle and took off on foot.

Shingange, Mushwana and Sanderson abandoned their vehicle and chased after the three suspects, throwing rocks at the fleeing men as they did not have their firearms at hand. After a long chase, the officers managed to subdue one of the armed suspects. The Tzaneen Tracing Team assisted in the search and found the remaining two suspects hiding in nearby bushes, one of them was armed.

A white Chevrolet Corsa utility bakkie used by the suspects is believed to have been stolen in Polokwane. Police are searching for the second vehicle, a white Chevrolet Cruze transporting four to five other suspects.
