Man arrested for SAPS detective shooting

The police have arrested a suspect who shot and seriously injured an off duty  34-year-old police detective in the early hours of this morning (Saturday) in the Louis Trichardt area.

LIMPOPO – A 27-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the attempted murder of a police detective in Louis Trichardt on Saturday morning.

The off duty constable stopped a suspect who skipped at red light. The suspect fired shots at the constable injuring him.

The suspect fled from the scene but crashed a short time later and was picked up by another vehicle.

According to Spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, the police received information about a man who was admitted to hospital who had possibly sustained injuries during the car crash on Saturday morning.

“On arrival the police immediately effected an arrest,” he said.

Mojapelo added that the suspect is being linked to a number is cases around the province and will appear in court soon.

The Provincial  Commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has expressed delight in the manner in which the police and community members worked together on this case. “This swift arrest of one of the most wanted criminals in the province is a perfect display of community policing at its best. This arrest will go a long way in ridding our province of any acts of criminality.” Said General Ledwaba.

LIMPOPO – According to a statement issued by Spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, it is alleged Constable Mpho Tshikhudo (34) together with a companion was driving along Krogh street when a white Nissan Tiida registration DHN 204L skipped a red robot. The constable pursued the vehicle.

“It is further alleged the suspect stopped, fired shots in their direction hitting the constable. The suspect fled from the scene, crashed a short time later and is alleged  to have been picked up by an unknown Ford Ranger,” he explained.

The constable, who was off duty at the time and driving his private vehicle, did not fire any shots, said Mojapelo.

“He was taken to hospital and admitted. His companion was not injured.”

The crashed vehicle was searched and a 9mm pistol with serial numbers filed off and one round of live ammunition were found inside.

Mojapelo confirmed that the vehicle was recently reported stolen from Westenburg policing area.
