Yet another rhino poached in Polokwane Game Reserve
Another rhino was shot and killed at the Polokwane Game Reserve on Monday.
POLOKWANE – Municipality Spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo confirmed the unfortunate incident and confirmed that the matter has been reported to the police and other relevant authorities for investigations.
“The incident is now handled by outside authorities, and due to security and its sensitive nature, the municipality has been advised no to release any information regarding the matter,” he said.
This is not the first rhino poaching incident at the Polokwane Game Reserve which left many questioning the security around the reserve.
In June, 2016 three rhinos were shot and killed and, again in January 2017 another rhino was also shot and killed. In all these incidents the rhinos were dehorned and in some cases the eyes, intestines, tail and part of the skin was also removed.
Mothapo however said the municipality cannot discuss the plans around the security.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Col Ronel Otto confirmed the incident and said a case of illegal hunting has been opened, and investigation is still ongoing as no suspects have been apprehended.
