Suspects up for Tzaneen farm attack

Three men who were arrested after a woman and her two children were attacked while they were sleeping on a farm, will appear in the Tzaneen Magistrate's Court on Friday.

LIMPOPO – Cornelius Chauke (24), John Mtetwe (25) and Shacks Lebepe (25) were remanded in custody when they appeared briefly in court last week. They face charges of attempted murder and house robbery.

The three were arrested after police launched a manhunt after a 39-year-old woman and her children, aged 10 and 8, were attacked on a smallholding in Lushoff outside Tzaneen last Tuesday morning at around 01:15.

According to local reports, the woman’s husband was not at home when the attack took place. He was in Standerton where his family is in the process of relocating to. His wife and children are expected to join him at the end of the school term.

“During the attack, the woman was shot on the face and taken to hospital for medical treatment. A 9mm pistol was taken,” Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed in a statement.

The children were allegedly beaten with golf clubs before neighbours arrived on the scene. The suspects fled the house on foot with the firearm, R2 000 in cash and the woman’s cellphone. The woman was later rushed to hospital but doctors couldn’t save her right eye.
