Man (36) in custody for stolen ivory

The stolen ivory is from an elephant which escaped from the Kruger National Park, said the police

LIMPOPO – A 36-year-old man found to be in possession of ivory was arrested by police  outside of Malamulele on Friday (yesterday).

According to Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the accused allegedly cut and stole ivory from an elephant which was shot by Kruger National Park Rangers in the area.  The elephant which had earlier escaped from the Kruger National Park was spotted in the area and rangers were summoned in, eventually it had to be shot, he explained.

“The police were called in and the man was tracked to the area between Moyeshe and Altein farm villages outside Malamulele where he was arrested and the ivory recovered.”

The suspect will appear before the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court on Monday on the charge of  possession of ivory, he said.

Police investigations continue.
