Churchgoers targeted by armed men along N1 South

One person was shot and another stabbed during the incident

LIMPOPO – 49 passengers and a bus driver were the victims of an armed robbery along the N1 near the Mantsole Traffic weigh bridge on Friday evening at around 22:30, says the police.

The bus (Phola Coaches) was transporting churchgoers from Johannesburg to Moria outside Polokwane.

“The incident took place when the bus stopped along the N1 road just after Mantsole Traffic weigh bridge for the passengers to relieve themselves,” said Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

“The  gun-wielding suspects accosted the driver,  shot the him in the leg and ordered him to drive further and take the Bela Bela off-ramp and then stop next to the road. They proceeded to rob the passengers of money shoes and cellphones. One of the passengers was stabbed in the arm during the incident.”

After the robbery the the suspects were seen jumping into a white bakkie and they fleeing in the northerly direction, adds Ngoepe.

The injured driver and passenger were taken to hospital.

The police urge anybody with information to contact their nearest police, concludes Ngoepe.
