5 die after vehicle catches fire outside Polokwane

POLOKWANE – The R521 road to Dendron (Mogwadi) was closed this morning after a bakkie and a truck collided at around 07:00 this morning (Saturday).

Five people who were traveling in the Mitsubishi double cab bakkie were burned beyond recognition when the vehicle caught fire after the collision, said Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

The bakkie was traveling toward Polokwane when the accident occurred, he added.

“The driver of the truck escaped with minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.”

The identities, gender, race and ages of the deceased will still be determined through the DNA’ tests, concluded Ngoepe.

The exact cause of the collision is still unknown and will form part of a police investigation.
