Two suspects were expected to appear in court soon after they were arrested on Tuesday by Police who clamped down on attempts to smuggle at least six stolen vehicles across the Limpopo River.
Provincial Police Corporate Communications Head, Motlafela Mojapelo said the intelligence driven operation comprised of members of the Tactical Response Team and K9 Unit supported by the South African National Defence Force and areas such as Pafuri, Beit Bridge and Pontdrift were targeted, according to Mojapelo.
Police recovered a Mercedes-Benz owned by a rental company and stolen in Durban recently. The suspect reportedly tried to smuggle the vehicle into Zimbabwe but got stuck in the river. A 28-year-old suspect was arrested.
A Range Rover en route to Malawi was also intercepted at Beit Bridge border post and the driver arrested. Police also pounced on suspects who allegedly tried to smuggle a Ford Ranger bakkie through the Limpopo River. No arrests were made as the suspects fled into the bush when they noticed the Police.
The operation further yielded the recovery of an Audi A6, a Mercedes-Benz and a Datsun Go.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba commended all participants of the operation for their sterling performance.
