Two suspected poachers remanded in custody

The two men were arrested in the week in possession of an unlicensed hunting rifle and for trespassing

LIMPOPO – The two men, aged 30 and 49-years-old, both from Lulekani near Phalaborwa were arrested in Hoedspruit for possession of an unlicensed firearm and for trespassing at the Madrid farm.

The suspects appeared before the Hoedspruit Magistrate Court on possession of an unlicensed hunting rifle and ammunition and for trespassing and were remanded in custody, with no bail, until 16 August for bail application and for further police investigation to take place.

The two men were arrested after the police received a tip-off from the community that they were en-route to commit illegal poaching at the Madrid farm.

Police reacted swiftly and during the arrest, the following items were recovered:

– One rifle.

– Six rounds of live ammunition.

– One axe.

Police say they will continue the fight against poachers in the province.
