The programme also aims to promote road safety and awareness in Limpopo schools.

MOKOPANE – The Assistant Director at the Circuit office of Department of Education, Simon Tlhako said the Department of Education is in the process to introduce the program whereby Gr 11 students can obtain the K53 learner licence in Limpopo schools.

Thlako said: “It is a time-consuming process and the Department have to make sure that all resources are in place before a program like this can be launched”. He could not give a due date but said it will be introduced in Limpopo Schools. The Spokesperson for Department of Education, Oupa Bodibe said in a statement: “The programme aims to equip learners in Gr 11 to obtain a K53 learner licence at no cost. The responsibility for obtaining a driver’s licence is still with the learner”.

According to Bodibe the main objective of the programme is to develop learners and equip them with the necessary life skills as part of youth empowerment.
