Ex-police reservist among six wanted suspects arrested in and around Burgersfort

The six suspects were arrested during an intelligence-driven operation on Wednesday night, 9 May.

LIMPOPO – Police in the province say their focus on eradicating all forms of criminal activity, especially trio crimes (business robberies, house robberies and car hijackings), is constantly bearing positive results.

This follows the arrest of six wanted suspects in the Burgersfort Cluster during a well coordinated intelligence-driven operation comprising of members from various police units.

According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, the suspects were arrested in different locations and among the suspects is an ex-police reservist.

“A former police reservist, who is believed to be the kingpin behind these crimes, was arrested at Ga-Selala village in Mecklenburg. Subsequent to his arrest, two pistols and a rifle were recovered at his home,” Mojapelo said.

Members of the operation followed up on information about the suspects, who have been tormenting communities in the Burgersfort cluster, committing serious crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, business and house robberies as well as carjacking.

One suspect was arrested in Groblersdal, three were cornered in Bothashoek and Ga- Mashamotana villages outside Burgersfort and two were nabbed in Tafelkop and Leukau.

Mojapelo says the suspects were linked to the following crimes:

• Two armed robberies at the Burgersfort Engen garage
• Two armed robberies at NWJ in the Tubatse Crossing Mall
• Two armed robberies at PPS garage in Burgersfort
• Hijacking of a Toyota Avanza and murder in Burgersfort
• House robbery in Tubatse
• Four business robberies in Ga-Mashamotane and Ribacross
• Attempted murder during a shootout with the police last week in Burgersfort
• Carjacking in Tubatse.

Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, has commended the team of investigators for a well coordinated operation that led to the apprehension of these suspects.

All six suspects will appear before the Burgersfort Magistrates Court soon.
