Cases against Northam double murder accused postponed to May

The accused, who is from Uganda, faces two counts of murder, arson, theft of motor vehicle and theft general.

LIMPOPO – A 24-year-old murder accused has appeared before the Northam Magistrate Court on Wednesday, 20 March and his cases were postponed to 14 May for further bail application and police investigations, said Police spokesperson, Constable Maphure Manamela.

The accused, who is from Uganda, faces two counts of murder, arson, theft of motor vehicle and theft general.

His arrested emanated from an incident which occurred on Weldebeeste Laagte Farm outside Northam on Friday, 4 January, where two bodies were found dead in a burning building.

According to earlier reports, preliminary Police investigations revealed who the possible suspect was and a manhunt operation ensued until at the accused was arrested at Rustenburg in the North West Province. The provincial police together with the help from the Rusternburg Public Order Police Unit, then recovered the deceased’s motor vehicle at a chop-shop in the Rusternburg Policing area. Various items belonging to the deceased were also found in the possession of the accused.

The deceased have been identified as Joshua Mutaasa (33) and a Rita Okelo (30). Both are Ugandian Nationals, Manamela added.
