Learners from the Intermediate Phase of Mitchell House closed the first quarter of the year last Wednesday with a prize giving ceremony in the school’s theatre and also celebrated the school’s 25th anniversary.
Learners received certificates for excellent performance in sport and academics and Vunene Hlaneki (u.13) and Yoanda Muditambi (u.12) were the Senior Victrix Ludorum Interhouse and Senior Victor Ludorum Interhouse award winners respectively. Nuha Hassim and Faatimah Anver received the Honours Re-award and Honours Award for academic achievements, respectively.
Addressing the learners, headmaster Andrew Cook took the opportunity to reflect on the school’s history, starting in a disused residence at Capricorn High School.
“The theme of today’s assembly is about turning dreams into reality. This is an appropriate theme for today because exactly 25 years ago our founders dreamed big. They imagined a school that would be a place of learning excellence. Then they put their hearts into making that dream a reality,” Cook said and added that in 2012 Mitchell House recorded its first matriculation results.
“The school has grown from 438 pupils in 2010 to 630 in 2017. Currently we have 776 learners enrolled and plan to have 850 by 2021. We have new sports fields, we have re-lined the swimming pool, built an administration block, a boarding establishment, a nutrition centre and the finest Early Childhood Development Centre in South Africa,” Cook proudly reported. Cook also said that future plans are to resurface the tennis courts with Astro and to build a science centre during 2020.
“You and your parents have inherited the result of others’ dreams. Every day I give thanks to God for what He is doing here. What is your dream going to be? How can we help you to turn it into reality and what are you going to do for our beautiful land,” Cook concluded.
