More than 1 000 medals were handed to learners of various schools in the province who excelled in the Limpopo round of the World Scholars Cup 2019 at a recent ceremony at Mitchell House.
The Limpopo round brought together over 200 learners from schools in the province to celebrate learning through team debates, the scholars challenge, the scholars bowl and collaborative writing. The qualifying teams will hone their skills in the Mini Global Round that will take place from 23 to 27 September in Durban.
As part of the provincial round, learners had to participate in a showcase debate. The topic for the debate explored whether teenagers should spend a year in poverty. Learners were also afforded the opportunity to share their diverse talents through the talent show.
The team debates were all impromptu and learners were provided time to research. In the scholars bowl, teams received a clicker and answered questions based on the theme for the year. The questions link the content from other challenges into the real world around them. Teams are never eliminated and everyone gets a sense of how much or how little they know. For the collaborative writing part, learners are given time to discuss topics with team mates from the choices available and were given time to write their thoughts to paper. Learners were also given an opportunity to review their work with team mates after writing. The scholars challenge was a multiple choice question paper based on the theme for the year. There was one fun caveat though – learners could select more than one answer for each question.
