Mogalakwena traffic superintendent killed by speeding vehicle, suspect released

The 59-year-old Piet Baloyi was off duty at the time of his death and was directing traffic on the R518 Marken road next to Masodi.

MOKOPANE – Police in Mahwelereng are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a Traffic Official Superintendent at the Mogalakwena Municipality, Piet Baloyi (59) was killed on Saturday evening, 3 August.

Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe explained that Baloyi was off duty at the time of his death. He was controlling traffic on the R518 Marken road next to Masodi following a motor vehicle accident. Baloyi was then hit by a speeding vehicle. Police responded quickly and the suspect was arrested at the scene.

“The 51-year-old suspect was charged with culpable homicide and appeared in Mogalakwena Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 5 August where he was released. He will appear again in the same court on 6 November 2019,” Ngoepe said.
