“Fast and Furious” ordeal on Ben Harris Street leaves one injured

The driver of one of two speeding vehicles on Ben Harris Street on Saturday night explained that he did not stop because he thought the other vehicle was trying to hijack him

POLOKWANE – “It felt like a scene from a Fast and Furious movie,” said an eyewitness who witnessed the collision between two bakkies in Ben Harris Street, Westenburg on Saturday evening.

The two vehicles travelling in the same direction were speeding in the main road overtaking other vehicles before the collision opposite Good Hope Primary School.

“First the silver bakkie passed us at a high speed, almost bumping our vehicle and the next moment, short on the tail of the silver bakkie a white bakkie sped past us. The driver of the white bakkie wanted to overtake the silver bakkie, but the driver of the silver bakkie refused to give way.

The next moment the driver of the silver bakkie bumped into the white bakkie and drove off. The white bakkie came to a standstill on the opposite side of the road. It was such a scary moment because the accident happened within seconds in front of us,” the eyewitness said.

The eyewitness further explained that the driver of the white bakkie was stuck in the vehicle and emergency service personnel had to free him when they arrived on the scene. The driver and the passenger sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital. Col Maimele Pilusa, Westenburg Police Station Commander, confirmed that a case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated and that no arrests have been made.

“There was no hit-and-run reported.

The driver of the silver bakkie who left the accident scene found members of the 10111 unit in Nelson Mandela Drive and stopped them, where he reported the incident.

The driver explained that he did not stop, because according to him, he thought the other vehicle was trying to hijack him as the vehicle was following him from the high school, pushing to overtake him,” Pilusa explained.

He added that the driver of the silver bakkie returned to the accident scene with the 10111 officials, and on arrival at the scene the officials contacted the Westenburg police.

“When the police arrived at the scene the ambulance was there and the driver of the other vehicle and the passenger were in the ambulance.

The police took their statements.”
