With the Grade 12 trial and National Senior Certificate examinations looming, the Sekgosese West Circuit hosted a week-long Matric Career of the Future Camp for schools in the circuit at a camping site on the outskirts of the city from last Sunday until Saturday.
During the camp, close to 180 learners had the opportunity to revise all their subjects guided by the best educators from participating schools in the circuit. The best performing learners of each of the partaking schools were chosen to be part of the camp with the hope of improving the matric pass rate.
The circuit hosted the first of the camps in 2018 and according to the organiser, Mphata Makakase the first programme yielded positive results and they were confident that this year’s edition would do the same. She remarked that the learners’ mind-sets changed completely once they started on the programme. According to her the schools covered the costs for transport, accommodation and meals for the duration of the camp and she applauded the circuit for coming up with such initiative.
Sekgosese West circuit manager Agnes Kgobe told the learners that there was a need for matrics to multiply their effort to pass with flying colours. She further highlighted that the main purpose was to feed the nation with young people who are ready to serve with distinction: “We selected and separated you from the rest because we are confident that you will produce the best results. We want to improve the matric pass rate in the circuit. Last year we obtained a 68% pass rate but we are aiming for 80% this academic year. We won’t settle for anything less than 75% and I am confident that the camp will help us achieve our goal. We also want to increase the number of bachelor passes, bachelors with distinctions and 300/300 passes.”
She reminded learners that for them to get bursaries they have to pass well. Kgobe emphasised that the circuit and educators have done their best in preparing Grade 12s for the exams hence it was time for learners to play their part by studying hard. She concluded by wishing learners well and expressed confidence that one of them would represent the province on the national stage during the announcement of the matric results.
