Women encouraged to take the wheel and take charge
Aniki Sibiya told BONUS that there are still many challenges women encounter because of their gender.
POLOKWANE – Women were urged to support and grow each other in the transport industry by Aniki Sibiya. Sibiya is the founder of Women Behind The Wheel and spoke at the organisation’s annual celebrations, which was held at Polokwane Royal Hotel on Sunday.
Dressed in their traditional attire, hundreds of women from the province graced the celebration. Sibiya told BONUS that there are still many challenges women encounter because of their gender. “We want to ensure that our women find themselves behind the steering wheel,” added Sibiya.

She explained that women have the ability to drive any kind of transport.
“God blessed us with many talents and we, therefore, need to support each other as women. We have suffered a lot as women and we, therefore, need to break those slavery chains and walk with pride. It is unfortunate that the slavery chains have denied us access to reach our goals and dreams,” she said.
Sibiya said the time for women to stand tall is now. “We need to be recognised, respected and treated equally,” added Sibiya. She shared that it is unfortunate that the public transport industry is dominated by male drivers.
“We believe that women can also make a positive impact on the industry. We urge aspirant women drivers with public driver permits to come on board and showcase what they are good at. We trust that by bringing more women into this line of business will bring peace into the industry because women are great peacemakers,” she said.
