The vehicles caught alight and the fire was doused by Fire and Rescue Services. “On closer inspection, most of the people escaped with little to no injuries, however, two, possibly three people died on the scene,” Herbst said.

The N1 has been closed in both directions and motorists are advised to use alternative routes. The scene has been secured by law enforcement to allow investigations to take place.
