Tip off leads to arrest of two illegal miners in Mecklenburg

A truck loaded with chrome was confiscated by police

LIMPOPO – Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe says relentless efforts to curb illegal mining in Limpopo has paid off with the recent arrest of two suspects over the weekend.

The two suspects were arrested during a concerted operation comprising of the Saps Provincial Organised Crime Unit and local Mine security guards, in the Mecklenburg Policing area outside Burgersfort.

“The operation followed a tip-off by the Tjibeng village community near Atok, outside Apel. The tip-off led police to one of the mines in the area and the two suspects were nabbed after they were caught mining chrome, illegally,” Ngoepe explained.

“The two suspects will appear before the Mecklenburg Magistrate Court soon and police investigations continue.”

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has warned those still mining illegally to stop immediately and if not, police are going to deal with them “harshly and without compromise.”
