Police Minister Bheki Cele has not only urged communities in rural areas to work closely with Police but also indicated during the launch of the National Rural Safety Strategy in Louis Trichardt on Saturday that the Police will strengthen resources in areas experiencing high cases of stock theft.
According to Police Ministry spokesperson Lirandzu Themba the launch is aimed at intensifying community-Police partnerships by enhancing the work of Rural Safety Priority Committees at national, provincial, district and station level.
The strategy was launched under the theme Zizojika Izinto, translated to tables will turn, to ensure communities that the tide will turn against rural crime by increased Police capacity and resources.
Cele urged rural community members to work hand in glove with law enforcement to improve their safety.
He further assured communities that the Police will continue to enforce the law. “Whether it be on foot or by air, in vehicles, motorcycles, quad bikes or on horses, this strategy will see crime prevention measures go where they have never gone before by focusing on hotspots in rural areas to turn the tide against crime,” Cele was quoted to have said.
Rural Safety Priority Committees are expected to meet quarterly to monitor incidents of violent crime and together with Police plan interventions, according to Themba.
