A 34-year-old prisoner escaped from the Thohoyandou Police Station holding cells on Monday, 21 October by jumping from the rooftop, breaking both legs in the process.

LIMPOPO – A 34-year-old awaiting trial prisoner will now be facing a charge of escaping from lawful custody after jumping from the roof of the Thohoyandou police cells on Monday 21 October.

Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo says Justice Rhudzani Muvhango, who was initially arrested for serious cases ranging from murder, business robbery, robbery in transit, malicious damage to property and possession of an unlicensed firearm, broke his legs when he jumped from the rooftop of the cells and crashed on the ground.

“He then deceived a policeman who found him crawling by telling him that he was knocked down by a speeding vehicle on the adjacent road and that the vehicle failed to stop after the accident. He was then taken to hospital for medical attention, only to be recognized by another policeman performing guard duties as the prisoner who escaped the previous day.”

Mojapelo says he was immediately rearrested and is currently under police guard at the hospital.
