Players and technical members of Vakhegula Vakhegula (grannies) Football Club met and interacted with shoppers and management of Mall of the North on their way to a Grannies Soccer Tournament in Mozambique last Wednesday.
The players were presented with goodies bags and enjoyed lunch at the local outlet of an Italian family restaurant.
They also had an opportunity to demonstrate their unusual soccer skills to the many shoppers who paused to watch the display.
Thalitha Lekganyane, Public Relations Manager at Mall of the North said the gesture was part of their social investment programme. “They are advocating a healthy lifestyle and they are also an inspiration to all of us. They have done well for themselves in their previous soccer tournaments and when we heard they will be travelling to Mozambique we felt we should do something for them as a way of showing appreciation. It was a good event and the shoppers were happy to see them,” Lekganyane said.
Beka Ntsanwisi who established the club 12 years ago thanked Mall of the North for hosting them. “It was our first time visiting the mall as a club. We are grateful for them. The gesture shows that people are taking us serious. It shows that they care about us and we don’t have words to thank them. We are saying to them they must keep doing a good work for the community,” Ntsanwisi said.
Over the years the grannies have travelled to the United States of America, Brazil, France and Russia to take part in major soccer tournaments.
