Lockdown: ’Now is the time to work on yourself’

While the lockdown may to some feel as if it is not going to end soon, a young motivational speaker encourages citizens to use the time to better themselves.

As a young woman of faith, the 25-year-old Karabo Mogotsi draws her strength from prayer in difficult times, and the Covid-19 pandemic is no exception.

This project manager and self-confessed advocate for feminism, is also a business administration graduate and motivational speaker. She started speaking after she Launched the PaulDave Foundation, named after her late parents, Paulina and David.

She is unapologetic about her motto in life: “If I can see it, I can have it, but only through hard work and perseverance”.  This motto, she says, has kept her going for years, through some of the most difficult times in her life. She lost both her parents at age 10, fell into depression at age 16 and was sexually harassed at 23, all which led to several suicide attempts.  But through all of this, she says, she has learnt her worth.

What makes her story different from other motivational speakers is her authenticity, she says. “For me there is truth behind my words. Speaking has changed my life by giving me purpose. Very few people get to live their purpose and for me it has granted me true fulfilment.” Karabo’s biggest accomplishment is obtaining her qualification. “I remember there were days that I had no money to pay rent. I would leave class early and ask my friends to take notes for me so that I can go and try and look for a job because I had a dream. And today that is a reality.”

Karabo says during this Covid-19 pandemic it is important to keep working on one’s craft. “If it’s studies, keep studying, if it’s becoming the next greatest radio presenter, keep practicing in front of that mirror. Read up about your market and inform yourself. It is difficult in this uncertainty, and you will wonder if your dreams are still worth it, or your dreams will be tested.”

She has more advice. “Try to do the things you always wanted to do at home but never tried, such as cooking or meditating. This is the time to work on yourself. I know it is tough, but you can beat this. Just hold on a little longer. Your story doesn’t end here.”
