Lockdown: Golfers give caddies a helping hand
What is a good game of golf without a great caddy? With this in mind members of the golf club decided to show their heartfelt support for the caddies during the nationwide lockdown.
POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Golf Club showed they care on Saturday, 9 May when they reached out to the more vulnerable in the golfing community.
What is a good game of golf without a great caddy? With this in mind members of the golf club decided to show their heartfelt support for the caddies during the nationwide lockdown.
According to golf club captain, Wynand Pretorius these caddies are such a big part of the golfing community. Following the outcry, the golf club in conjunction with members, including farmers around the city and the Rotary Club donated clothes, food and vouchers from various chain stores in the city.
“The caddies usually depend on tips they receive from golfers and with the lockdown, they are unable to earn an income and we knew we had to do something to support them, as we know how valuable they are.
“This is something that is happening nationally and locally we got together to do our part during this difficult time. GolfRSA donated the vouchers which allow the caddies to buy what they need for them and their families,” Wynand said.
More than 40 gathered at the golf club to receive this much needed donation.
One of the caddies spoke to Review and said that he has been working at the golf club since 1988 and that this gestures means a lot. It shows that the golf club members care about the caddies. He said the caddies can’t wait to return to the golf club to be the eyes the golfers need.
“I am thankful for the assistance that we were given and I pray that God will keep all the people safe during this time especially those who thought about someone like me,” Harry Chokwe said.
This is not the only planned outreach by the Polokwane Golf Club and later on, more packages to relieve the caddies’ needs as well as vouchers will be handed out to them to help them through the lockdown period.
A database has also been created to get these people back into a situation where they could earn money as soon as the lockdown rules allow golf players to take to the greens again with their trusted caddies by their side.
