Musina ward councillor out on bail for illicit cigarettes

The councillor was arrested for the possession of illicit cigarettes and appeared in court for the second time today.

LIMPOPO – A 44-year-old Musina ward councillor, who was arrested for the possession of illicit cigarettes, appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court for the second time today.

The councillor was arrested on 19 July during a joint operation conducted by police members from Masisi and Tshamutumbu, according to a statement by Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo. 

“The councillor was arrested at around 02:30 along the Manenzhe public road. The members spotted a suspicious vehicle travelling along the said road and then stopped it. Upon searching the vehicle, they found 41 cartons of Remington Gold and 35 loose packets of Royal Express cigarettes,” Mojapelo said.

He added that the vehicle was impounded and that the cigarettes were confiscated.

The councillor was granted R1 000 bail and his case was postponed until 26 August for further police investigation.
