Cash-in-transit gang gets double life sentences

The men were arrested during a foiled cash-in-transit robbery in Mokopane CBD

LIMPOPO – The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba has welcomed the heavy sentences handed to three men who conspired to rob a cash-in transit vehicle in Mokopane in 2017.

On Thursday, 6 August the Polokwane High Court found the three men guilty of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and reckless and negligent driving.

The suspects were arrested on 1 April 2017 during a foiled cash-in-transit heist in the central business district.

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapleo said that on the day, members of the Provincial Tracking Task Team led by Lieutenant Colonel Richard Boshomane assisted by Crime Intelligence operatives, had followed up on information received about five suspects who were intending to rob the G4S security truck in Mokopane CBD.

“The suspects were spotted and after a car chase the men were cornered between the Nelson Mandela and De Klerk streets. A shoot-out ensued between the robbers and the police and two robbers were fatally wounded. Three were arrested and a R5 rifle, two pistols and a Ford Ranger Wildtrek confiscated. Investigations revealed that the bakkie was stolen in Westenburg policing area on the outskirts of Polokwane in January 2017.”

Daniel Boitumelo Aphane (34), Charles Mogale (51) and Sehlabe Louis Nthuthwana (41) were convicted on two counts murder, three counts of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and reckless and negligent driving.” They were each sentenced to two life imprisonment terms and a combined 42 years imprisonment for other crimes,” Mojapleo added.

Ledwaba further commended the team whose meticulous investigations led to the state securing these lengthy sentences in court.

“The successes of this team will go a long way in ridding the province of incidents of crime, especially violent crimes,” concluded General Ledwaba.

He added that this team has succeeded in securing life sentences in not less than twelve cases in 2019 and the first semester of 2020.
