POLOKWANE – Regular customers know that Vleislapa Welgelegen is their one-stop shop for all their braai, biltong and something sweet to eat needs.

The popular butchery has been part of the Polokwane community for years. The Vleislapa Group opened the butchery in 2006 under the watchful eyes of Erhens van Tonder.

In 2010, Jacques joined his dad as co-owner when they had the opportunity to buy the Vleislapa Welgelegen branch from the Vleislapa Group. Soon after, Jacques’ wife, Amanda joined the team and for many years they were fortunate enough to trade under the Vleislapa brand.

“My father and I bought the shop together and without him, the shop would not have been a cut above the rest. I remember working on weekends and during school holidays as a young boy at the Vleislapa in Grobler Street in 1993. Here I had my uncles, Kobus and Marius van Tonder, and my dad who taught me everything I know about the meat industry. It wasn’t always easy, but with my dad by my side we managed to become a favourite stop for residents. My dad retired in 2015.”

Together with his wife Amanda, Jacques is starting a new venture and bringing change to the store by re-branding it with a new name and a store-front face lift.

“During the nationwide lockdown, our customers asked us for some variety, and this planted the seed. Although the front view of the store will change, everything else will remain the same. Our suppliers and stock remain of the Amanda and Jacques van Tonder decided to change the Vleislapa Welgelegen name.same high quality. We will also focus on the products we make ourselves.”

Jacques and Amanda are very mysterious about what the new name is, but they are confident that customers will relate to it.

The name is more modern, easy to remember, and not location-bound. It is something you will easily buy on a Saturday morning.

”A new website will also be launched on December 7, where people can order, pay, and their meat delivered. On 3, 4, and 5 December, the store’s doors will open under the new name with entertainment for customers for Will Jordan, Juba and Pieter Koen.
