Bohlale invents tracking device for victims of human trafficking and GBV

The Gr 11 learner explained the small object can be inserted in earrings and capture photos of perpetrators, enabling the police to quickly identify them.

POLOKWANE – Bohlale Mphahlele is taking the meaning of her name (intelligent) to a new level. Bohlale is a young scientist who has invented an alerting ear piece which can track victims of human trafficking and gender based violence.

The MEC for Education, Polly Boshielo has praised Bohlale and noted that her device can help in the fight against crimes against women and children. The Gr 11 learner from SJ van der Merwe Technical High School in the Lebowakgomo Circuit, says the device was recently showcased at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, in the category for Engineering-electronics and embedded systems.

“This is a small object that can be inserted in earrings and capture photos of perpetrators, enabling the police to quickly identify them,” she explained.

Boshielo tells BONUS that the past few weeks have been difficult on them as a sector. “It was traumatic when we experienced the tormenting pain of gender based violence on our learners. It is a difficult thing to go through as a mother and a leader. We are always looking for answers and ways to protect our children, and this invention gives me hope that we shall overcome,” she said.

Boshielo adds that she is a firm believer in technology and its capacity to address some of the challenges the province encounters. Bohlale is more than happy about the device and says she hopes it comes in handy if such incidents of human trafficking occur within the province.

“As much as we know that there were some rumours that human trafficking is not real in our city, we never know what might hit us unexpectedly. So we should rather be safe than sorry,” Bohlale said.

“It is a proud moment to see that all our efforts towards improving technical schools in the province are yielding results. Congratulations to Bohlale, peers and the team of educators that is rallying behind her in this technological endeavour,” Boshielo said.
