Eskom to implement stage 2 loadshedding this weekend

Eskom says the system is severely constrained and this loadshedding is necessary so that the depleted emergency generation reserves for the coming week can be replenished.

Loadshedding Stage 2 will be implemented from 06:00 to 23:00 today (Saturday, 12 December) and continue from 06:00 on Sunday (13, December). This is according to a statement which was issued by Eskom on Friday evening.

“The system is severely constrained and this loadshedding is necessary so that the depleted emergency generation reserves for the coming week can be replenished.”

As Eskom ramps up its planned maintenance during the lower demand summer period, as previously committed, it has had a large number of unforeseen breakdowns from the ageing, unreliable plant over the past few days. In addition to this, Eskom has taken two generation units at the Kendal Power Station offline in compliance with environmental legislation. Similarly, four generation units at the Camden Power Station have been taken offline to conserve the integrity of the ash dam facility.”

Eskom adds that they currently have 7 452MW on planned maintenance, while another 10 208MW of capacity is unavailable due to unplanned maintenance.

“Eskom teams are working around the clock to return as many of these units to service as soon as possible. In the meantime we request the people of South Africa to continue using electricity sparingly in order to help us limit the impact of loadshedding.”

Any significant changes to the current power system will be timeously communicated.
