3 killed in head-on collision on R71

Five others sustained injuries and were taken to hospital.

LIMPOPO – Three people have died following a head-on collision on the R71 near Sapeko Tea Plantation outside Tzaneen in the Mopani district.

According to a statement by the Department of Transport and Community Safety’s Media Liaison Officer, Mike Maringa, five others escaped with injuries.

“A sedan and a hatchback collided and reports suggest one of the drivers lost control of his vehicle and collided head-on with the other vehicle,” Maringa explained.

He said two males and a female were certified dead on the scene.

“One person was critically injured and four others escaped with minor injuries. Preliminary investigations revealed speeding as a possible cause of the accident,” he added.

The injured were taken to Van Velden Hospital, Maringa concluded.

The Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, is worried about the rise in accidents caused by speeding.
