Registered counsellor Maphuti Mashiane gives tips to remain calm in the Covid-19 storm.
POLOKWANE – Stress and anxiety is a reality for many people as we are plagued by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, there has been so much uncertainty about the future and the stress and anxiety from fear of losing loved ones, losing jobs and getting infected by the virus. Registered counsellor Maphuti Mashiane explained that the Covid-19 pandemic affects our mental health and has had a major effect on our lives.
“Most, if not all of us, are facing stressful and overwhelming challenges and experiencing mixed emotions which are worsened by concerns more especially among our elderly and people with underlying health conditions. The main psychological impacts that Covid-19 is instilling to date are constant worrying, confusion, feelings of fear, sadness, anger and frustrations,” he said.
He added that, however, with the measures introduced and implemented such as social distancing, wearing of masks, sanitising, washing of hands regularly and staying home when necessary, this will assist in remaining calm during this difficult times.
“Take breaks from watching or listening to news and hearing about the pandemic time and again, because all the news can be frustrating. Although it is good to be informed, we need to consider limiting news to just a couple times and this will assist in remaining calm,” he added.
Maphuti said to remain positive, one should keep in mind “the stronger the body, the healthier the mind”.
“We need to take care of our physical health, try to eat healthy, exercise regularly, meditate and avoid excessive use of substances. Make time to unwind and connect with others who you trust about how you are feeling and your concerns.”
