POLOKWANE – “It is disturbing to hear about a fatal incident which involves minors.” These were the words of MEC for Social Development Nkakareng Rakgoale who condemned a recent incident where a boy (11) was reportedly lured from his home and killed.

According to an earlier police statement the two accused, both aged 15-years-old, had invited the deceased, Tibane Mahanyele to a soccer game in an adjacent village.

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo explained that Tibane did not return home that evening and his family reported him missing at the Seshego Police Station.

“A search operation was launched and initial investigations led the police to the minors who were found in the possession of the deceased’s cellphone.

“Further probe led the police to the location where they found the body of the 11-year-old boy.”

In a statement, Rakgoale confirmed that the department has deployed social workers to GaMamadila village outside Seshego to provide psycho-social support to the family of the 11-year old boy.

“Our social workers who are going to visit the affected families will start debriefing sessions to all the affected parties, as well as to the minors who are already kept at the department’s Secure Care Center which deals with minors who are in conflict with the law to create a conducive environment for the law to take its course.” She added that the incident is indicative of the social ills in our society

“We need to confront these matters head on as they have a capacity to doom the future of our children. These are children who are supposed to play and grow together so that they can be future leaders. ” concluded Rakgoale. The two suspects will undergo assessments by a probation officer before they appear in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court, Mojapelo concluded.
