Flora Park mom steps in as cops want to arrest son

The police in Polokwane have confirmed a charge of interfering with the work of the police, after a woman in Flora Park refused the police entry by blocking the road with her vehicles when they intended to arrest her son on a charge of theft.

According to Police Spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, traffic officials were called and two cars were removed and impounded as they now formed part of a contravention of the Traffic Act charge.

“We don’t have more information or the latest on this docket but the Polokwane police were at the scene after being called by members of the community. Investigations into the cases of both the mother and son are still continuing.”

Mojapelo says the case of the woman will appear again at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on 11 May, and her son will appear on 12 May.

It is alleged that the son, who is also a resident of Flora Park, has been responsible for a number of housebreaking and theft incidents in the area.

Some of the residents, who were apparent victims to these acts went to the house to confront him, and found some of the stolen items.

A resident who opted to remain anonymous says the theft has increased in the last few years, and she suspects he steals to fuel his drug addiction.

“Usually we would talk to his mother and try to explain to her the problems we are facing because of him, but that never assists us permanently.

With this last incident, we decided to stop taking the law into our own hands and engage the police directly, but all we got from the mother was insults.”

Videos of the day circulating on social media depict a woman, who is said to be the mother of the suspect, insulting residents.

In a part of the video, she is seen telling them that someone will account for embarrassing her family.

Vincent Kunutu, the Chairperson of Seshego Community Against Crime and Gangsterism said they engaged with the woman after the incident.

“She explained to them that as a single parent of a problematic son it is a bit difficult when the community around her is not supportive. We sat with the woman, who explained her problems to us and the frustration that led to the insults on the day of the incident. She apologised for her behaviour and we will be finding a way to assist her further.”

Attempts to speak to the woman were fruitless.
