Health dept celebrates Women’s Day

In celebrating Women's Day, Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba led a team of female surgeons who celebrated the day by performing various surgical procedures to patients who have been on a waiting list.

LIMPOPO – The surgeries were performed at the Mankweng Academic Hospital on Women’s Day as part of the department’s Women’s Month celebrations in honour of Charlotte Maxeke, a black female science graduate who would have been 150 years this year, by performing 150 different surgical procedures.

President Cyril Ramaphosa declared 2021 the year of Charlotte Maxeke.

Ramathuba says the department is humbled by its female medical and dental specialists who vowed to celebrate national Women’s Month by changing the lives of those in rural and poor communities.

On the day, 11 patients underwent pediatric surgery.

As part of these celebrations the MEC will also lead a team of medical and dental specialists from August 11 to 14 at the Tshilidzini and Elim hospitals as they continue to celebrate women across the province.

“Women professionals in the health department from different disciplines will continue to celebrate this month by enhancing the rural health matters outreach programmes aimed at changing the lives of our community members.

“It is through these programmes that various procedures will be conducted for less advantaged people who have been waiting in the queue for too long.”

She says the rural health matters project which are spearheaded by female specialists have been held in the Waterberg and Capricorn districts, with Vhembe earmarked as the third, and before month end the programme will have been rolled out to the remaining districts.
