Members of the Botha Shellhole of the Memorable Order of the Tin Hats (Moths) hosted its Old Bill's Dinner at the shellhole on Saturday evening with some invited guests and residents of the Moths' housing facility, known as Peacehaven.

Old Bill Anton le Roux welcomed the guests and shared some of his recollections of Ops Askari, where South African soldiers were involved in a battle about 350kms into Angola on the way to Lusaka in 1983. “The camaraderie that we share here at Peacehaven is not different from what we experienced in Angola. We are one big family and we care for one another and my involvement here is something that I will forever cherish,” Le Roux said.

“The shellhole started with 18 members and I am proud to say that the have grown our membership to 62, excluding 18 supporters. We have also received awards for the best growth as well as the best communication, among others,” Le Roux added.

Awards were made to Moth's Wikus de Beer (Mutual Help Floating trophy), Jolan Radmore (Sound Memory Floating trophy), Izak Cilliers (True Comradeship Floating trophy) and Anton Prinsloo (Good Comradeship certificate).

Le Roux also handed out certificates of appreciation to civilian pilots Kowie Roux, Martin Erasmus and JJ Cronjé for their participation in the flypass during the Poppy Day Parade in November.

A highlight of the event was the ample dinner consisting of a chicken salad starter, chicken pie, beef rolls in gravy, pumpkin fritters, creamed spinach, baby potatoes in garlic sauce, rice and potato and green salads. The meal was rounded off with malva pudding and ice-cream.
