A royal taste for every meal.

Fhatuwani Sinthumule is the face of Royalty Chillies Jalapeno, a business that she founded with her husband and son.

The 40-year-old from Flora Park explained that the name royalty chillies is a play on words connecting to her and her husband's royal lineage.

“We both come from royal families hence it made sense to name the business after that,” she said.

Although she works in government, her husband is a farmer and they own 12 hectares of land.

“One hectare is dedicated solely to growing chillies. Her background in catering gave her an advantage when she decided to start exploring different flavours for her packaged jalapeno chillies.

She started putting together her jalapeno chillies last year during the lockdown as a way to pass time.

“I was bored and we had loads of chillies from the farm so I decided to make something. Initially, it was for myself and people who tasted it enjoyed it.

“That's when we decided to turn it into a business,” she said.

A lot of research went into creating the finished product.

Fhatuwani explained that the kept the chillies in the fridge for up to six months to check the fermentation process and through that realised that the glass packaging was better than plastic.

Initially, the business plan was to supply directly to individuals to sell and be empowered, however, it has been difficult to find people who are committed.

“I wanted to empower people but it's difficult because the level of commitment from people is just not the same,” she explained.

She spends a lot of her weekends with her family going to various markets to sell the chillies.
