DIY Christmas gifts to make for your loved ones

Graffiti artist and accessory designer Siya Magabadeli gives step-by-step instructions for two easy to make gifts at home.

POLOKWANE – Add a touch of emotion and effort into your Christmas gifts this year and make them at home.

Review spoke to Graffiti artist and accessory designer Siya Magabadeli from Turfloop, who shared two easy gift ideas you can make at home.

Siya started making his own designs at the age of 11, and feels the best gifts to give come straight from the heart. ‘The best Christmas gift cannot always be bought, but can easily be made from recycle products at home,” he added.

Christmas card

You will need:
• White paper plates.
• White, green and red coloured papers.
• Colourful glitter.
• Glue.
• Scissors.
• Cotton wool.
• Black and red markers or buttons.

Instructions:
• Place the white paper plate in front of you, which will be the head.
• Cut a triangle out of the red paper (the size doesn’t really matter), which will be your hat. Paste in on top of the plate.
• Paste a couple of cotton wool on the top of the hat, as well as a bunch at the bottom of the paper plate with glue. The cotton wool should be around the plate in a circular motion to make Santa’s beard.
• Cut a smaller round shape out of the red paper to make the nose. Alternatively, you can draw a red circle in the centre or even use a red button.
• Now paste the black buttons as your eyes or use a black marker.
• Write your message at the back of the plate or on the hat.

Cookie jar or creative tin

You will need:
• A big tin like powder milk tins.
• Any colour paint.
• A needle and a hammer.
• Any Christmas decoration you can find at home or at the shop.

Instructions:
• Empty, wash and dry the can.
• Take the needle and hammer and punch holes in the can, by writing small words such as ‘love’, ‘care’ or ‘xoxo’.
• Start painting the tins in any colour you wish, preferably Christmas colours like white, red and green.
• Let the paint dry and start decorating them with the Christmas decorations.
