New year’s resolutions: yay or nay?

Residents tell us how they feel about making new year's resolutions.

POLOKWANE – Inspirational speaker Karabo Mokgosi says the concept of new year’s resolutions comes from the opportunity to start afresh that presents itself in the new year.

“With a new year or a birthday it is common to look at it as a fresh start or a new leaf. We have been given a new opportunity to make new plans and that’s where the resolutions come in. These are usually new plans, goals and new hopes.”

She says to make sure your goals are attainable you need to make sure you can visualise it so you can work toward what you want. Everything you want to accomplish in life you need to see first and it needs to be your personal vision so you can own it. She adds this is important because if it is your vision, even if other people don’t see it or believe in it, you will still carry it out and not give up.

“It is also important to have a plan on how you will reach your goal. Without a plan you can’t build a house, no matter how good the builder is. You can also give yourself a time frame and set a standard on what terms you will make it happen. It gives you a good strategy and allows you to see how far you have come.”
Karabo says at the beginning of the year we always have a sense of motivation to make plans, but very often we run out of motivation as time goes by and do not do the work. “You forget everything you have planned and this is because we do noting about the plans or goals we made. If you decide to lose weight but don’t do anything about it you won’t accomplish the goal, for example.”

She finished off by saying to properly attain a goal you need to be hungry for it, you need to want it bad to put in all the work and emphasised the importance to add your resolutions to your daily plans. Review asked some locals how they feel about making new year’s resolutions.

Residents tell us how they feel about making new year’s resolutions:

Thapelo Bopape: I think it is important to a certain level to have a plan for the new year. I just don’t think it has to be in the form of resolutions. You need to know where you are going and how you are planning to get there and with that comes the consistency you need to carry out the plans or an ability to adapt and change them if and when the need arises.
Mapula Makola: I do not think it is really important because some of us think of a new year when we turn a year older. I think I focus more to start a new year on my birthday and setting a timeline in that sense. Usually on my birthday or the days before it I will reflect on the year that passed and the year ahead. January 1, for me is more about celebrating the passed year with family and friends.
Amy Neluvhola: I think new year’s resolutions are important to set goals for yourself. Sometimes we get lazy and just go with the flow and months later you realise that you have not achieved anything. To avoid that I always make a plan for myself or just a list of things I want to achieve. This list shouldn’t be too serious and it must make provision for fun and enjoying life.
