POLOKWANE – There is a misconception that depression affects specific age groups, which is not true.
Old people in their retirement years can suffer from depression and much of it can be attributed to the changes they undergo over the years.
Polokwane Observer recently spoke to registered counselor Pearl Ramotshedisi who explained that the triggers can range from feelings of abandonment when placed in a home for the elderly, or even just mourning the loss of their youth and being unable to do things for themselves in the way they used to.
There is no magic remedy to take away the blues and it takes the effort of those around them to make them feel good.
“Give them positive affirmations, let them know that they are loved.
“Let them feel that despite their old age, they matter,” she said.
Ramotshedisi emphasised the importance of being actively present and show affection as a way to cherish the time they have left.
