POLOKWANE – With her famous tagline ‘when it is homemade, it is made with love’, Drieka Rothman (58) started her baking business in February.
She bakes and prepares all her products fresh at home from where it goes straight to the customer’s hands because, as Drieka says, she loves to sell her products straight from her kitchen oven. She added that flea markets help her boost the business even more.

“What encouraged me to start my small business is the fact that I need an income to survive and support my family. My biggest motivation is my husband, Gerhard, who is wheelchair-bound. He unfortunately lost both his legs and only earns the South African Social Security Agency grant, which we feel is still not enough to sustain him,” she explained.

“It takes me about nine hours to make my tarts and two hours to make the small cookies. The time I spend in the kitchen is all worth it because I love to cook and bake,” she said.
Drieka also believes that on a scale of one to 10, she will rate her business an eight according to the support from customers, as she is doing well since she started to sell her products two months ago.
“I believe that when you’re in business, you must make sure that you sell the right products the customer prefers by asking and listening to the their preferences, because the customer’s always right,” she concluded.
