POLOKWANE – Local police are on the hunt for a man who fired shots at them on Monday (April 25).

In a statement, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said Limpopo Highway Patrol members received information that the man was selling drugs near Savannah Mall.

“At around 18:30, the members stopped next to the vehicle matching the description given. They then approached the vehicle with the aim of searching it, however, the man sped off in the vehicle while he shot at them,” Ledwaba explained.

He said police retaliated and that a car chase ensued. “The man abandoned his vehicle next to a nearby hospital and fled into the darkness on foot. The vehicle was searched and drugs and rounds of ammunition was found,” Ledwaba added.

At this stage it is unclear if the man was struck in the shootout, but police confirmed that the “vehicle was found with a bullet hole”.  No officers sustained injuries.

“A massive manhunt has since been launched and anyone with information that can help in the apprehension of the man is urged to contact investigating officer Warrant Officer Gerald Kotze on 082 744 8205. Alternatively, contact the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or your nearest police station,” he said and added that cases of attempted murder and suspected dealing in drugs were opened.

Review contacted Savannah Mall centre manager Janene Wessels who confirmed the shooting incident. “I can confirm that shots were fired near the bus stop outside the mall. No drugs were sold on the mall’s premises and no shopper was affected by the incident,” she explained.

Wessels lauded the police for their effort to keep the community safe. “I want to thank them for their quick response and efforts to fight crime in the city.”
