Former Thulamela mayor implicated in VBS saga steps down
Avhashoni Tshifhango was arrested in February and charged with corruption and maladministration.
LIMPOPO – Former Thulamela mayor and now MMC for the Vhembe district, Avhashoni Tshifhango, has stepped down.
Tshifhango wrote a letter to the provincial committee of the ANC indicating his intention to step down, following a decision by the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to amend the step-aside guidelines at a special meeting, two weeks ago.

Tshifhango was implicated in the VBS Mutual Bank saga after the municipality invested R30m. He was arrested in February and charged with corruption and maladministration.
Tshifhango is out on bail of R30 000 and will appear before the Polokwane Commercial Court on May 24.
Soviet Lekganyane, the secretary of the PEC, confirmed they received Tshifhango’s letter on May 6 after many attempts by the organisation informing him to step aside.
“It is, however, up to the Vhembe mayor to relieve Tshifhango of his duties as MMC from his corporate services. We also advise that, as loyal comrades of the movement, they abide by what the NEC has resolved,” said Lekganyane.
