Campaign set to keep Polokwane’s streets and residents clean
Local departments banded together to rehabilitate a public centre and residents who struggle with drug abuse.
POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Municipality will from now on clean the Indian Centre weekly on Wednesdays.
On Tuesday (September 13), the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment teamed up with the Capricorn District Municipality and the Limpopo Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism (Ledet) to launch the clean-up programme by embarking on a thorough clean-up of the area.

A member of the Mayoral Committee in Waste and Environment, Jeniffer Malope, led the initiative, while employees of the Expanded Public Works Programme did most of the cleaning.
She said drug addicts who live in the area appealed to Mayor John Mpe to assist with rehabilitation measures.
“The mayor agreed and we are confident that moving them to a place where they can receive help will restore dignity for them and perhaps they will get piece jobs and make something of their lives.”

In a statement, Ledet said the objective of the campaign is to highlight the importance of active citizenry in the protection and management of natural resources and pollution in all residential areas.
“Most of our residential areas are faced with a scourge of environmental degradation emanating from illegal dumping. Environmental degradation stalls economic development discourages investors, and negatively contributes to the health of our people. The 2022 Polokwane cleanup and recycle campaign will focus on education and awareness within our neighbourhoods, open spaces, roadsides, rivers, schools, the city of Polokwane, and illegal dumping sites,” the statement reads.
