Mokopane teen spearheads municipality clean-up

Leo Lemos, a Gr 7 learner from the Mokopane Destiny Academy (MDA), said he was inspired by his teacher to make a difference in his community.

MOKOPANE – The municipal building in Roedtan looking brand-new after a recent makeover initiated by the ‘I Love Roedtan’ project.

Spearheaded by Leo Lemos, a Gr 7 learner from the Mokopane Destiny Academy (MDA), the building got some much-needed attention with fresh paint as well as garden work and a general clean-up and upkeep.

Lemos initiated the project in 2022 and was inspired by his teacher Lourina van Zyl to make a difference in his community.

After two successful projects, he decided to take on the municipal building. “This is the third ‘I Love Roedtan’ project so far and many more are planned. Thank you to all the people of Roedtan who took the time to help. We hope to see more of you next time,” he told Bosveld.

Leo was joined by his parents, residents and business owners from the area and surroundings, of which some were from the Noord-Transvaal Koöperasie, Superior Café, Viva Garage, Total Garage, #SalonEska, the SAPS as well as a local farmer and his wife.

The Mayor of Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality Marlene van Staden thanked those involved and added that anyone can also make a difference just by cleaning up in front of their own house and businesses.

“The better our towns look the better chance we have of attracting tourists and investors.”

MDA aims to train their learners to be responsible, beneficial citizens who take care of themselves, build their environment and benefit those around them.
