Local depression and anxiety support group launched

The group is set to meet twice a month on Friday evenings at the community centre in Ivypark

POLOKWANE – The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) launched a new face-to-face anxiety and depression group on March 3 in Ivypark.

The group aims to help individuals struggling with anxiety and depression by hosting a support group.

A support group can be defined as a gathering of people with shared experiences and concerns, who meet to provide emotional and moral support to others.

Group leader Daleen Lekoape said the support group is mandated to provide a safe space for people to share their thoughts and feelings, ask questions, and access resources to help them cope with the stress and anxiety. “I have come across many people who have been affected by mental illness but haven’t had any resources to get information or help. It’s almost taboo to even talk about it but many need an outlet such as this.”

Lekoape noted that one of the biggest advantages is that you’ll get support from other people who experience the same feelings.

That can improve your mood and make you feel less alone.

“We want to encourage more open discussion about mental illness and health. Build a culture where we can assist those in need and eliminate the stigma that is currently attached to mental diseases so that people can get over the shame they associate with it and feel comfortable asking for support, direction, or assistance.”

She added that the group is open to anyone in and around Polokwane at no charge.

The group is set to meet twice a month on Friday evenings at the community centre in Ivypark opposite the Peninapark turnoff.
